It’s no secret that plastic pollution is a problem of pandemic proportion! An estimated 11 million tons of plastic enter our oceans each year from the environment via rivers - and the trend is rising.

As plastic is broken down by the environment it breaks up into microplastics, these tiny pieces of less than 5mm make their way up the food chain, they become highly concentrated, and the harmful chemicals they contain can damage the digestive tracts of animals that consume them. Plus, those same chemicals can be absorbed by the animals and cause long-term health problems.

The exponential use of plastic in all aspects of life is leading to the ever-increasing pollution of our oceans. In 1950, around 1.5 million tons of plastic were produced worldwide - by 2015, this figure had risen to 322 million tons. By reducing our reliance on single-use plastics and making sure we recycle properly, we can help reduce the amount of plastic waste that ends up in the ocean.

Our cleantech partner, CleanHub has developed a system that connects sustainable brands looking to combat plastic pollution with collection partners who manage plastic recycling initiatives in countries with high environmental impact.

CleanHub's digital platform facilitates the recovery of plastic waste on a large scale in these areas. Local service providers collect and recover all plastic waste, supported by the funding provided by partner brands like TYME. CleanHub then sources the most effective methods for managing plastic waste, with any unrecyclable materials being transformed into alternative fuels.

The fundamental idea behind Cleanhub's approach is that for every kilogram of plastic we introduce into circulation, Cleanhub’s partner network collects one kilogram of plastic from the environment before it reaches the ocean.

Cleanhub has partnered with more than 70 brands to date and has already recovered plastic from the environment equivalent to the weight of more than 20 million water bottles in India, Indonesia, Tanzania, and Brazil.

To see exactly how much plastic has been recovered and how much of an impact we’re making, check out the full report here.
